Dear fellow reader,

if you have not read my earlier reports, here is a short summary:
I'm Linda Bouwens, I live in the Netherlands and I will go to Genadendal, South-Africa in two months, organized by my high school. At school we do a lot of preparation, like creating lessons about the Netherlands, to teach the children something about our country. We have also done some teambuilding.

Me and my team met up in November. We watched a film about Nelson Mandela. It is called 'Nelson Mandela In The Name Of Freedom'.

Some facts that the film thaught us are:
1. February 1990 he was released from jail after 27 year.
2. He was born in 1918 in Mvezo, in former Transkei
3. His father died when he was eight years old
4. Sidelsky was his first white friend
5. In 1952 he opened a law firm for black people
6. June 1961 Mandela was in hiding and held an interview with a British man while hiding.
7. April 27, 1994: elections were held and Nelson became president.

The film thought us about Mandela's whole life: from being born till his death in 2013. It is a very good film if you want to know something about Nelson Mandela's life.

One month later (December) we had another meeting. We talked a lot and did a 'pub quiz' with the theme 'South-Africa'.

The coaches told us about norms and values in South-Africa. The boys over there act different than in Europe. They can come too close to you, and we, Europians, are not used to that. The coaches told us that we should be prepared to say 'stop' and 'no'. We should clearly lay our limits.

Another norm and value is the way we dress. We should cover our shoulders and our thights, especially in school.

The last norm and value they thaught us, is their religion. Over there it is very weird if you do not have a religion, in the Netherlands it is not very weird. Therefore, we should respect their religion in any way, even though you might not have a religion yourself.

We also counted all the money we collected till now with the fundraising. We still have two months to collect money. At the moment we have €4600,- collected by 19 people. We hope to reach €5000,- (at least). We will spend the money on whatever charity we want in South-Africa.

At the end of the meeting we did a nice quiz about South-Africa to close 2018 down and to learn some more about for example their language.

Merry Christmas and a happy 2019!
